What happens if your luggage is over 50 lbs United Airlines?
United Airlines will charge for bags on U.S. domestic flights that are greater than the standard 50 pounds (23 kg): 51 to 70 pounds or 24 to 32 kilograms: $100 to $200 extra per bag. 71 to 100 pounds or 33 to 46 kilograms: $400 extra per bag. Baggage fees for international flights from the US range from $200 to $400.
Can a checked bag be over 50 lbs?
Checked bags should not exceed 62” (157.48 cm) in overall dimensions (length + width + height) or 50 pounds (22.68 kg) in weight. Bags that don’t meet the dimensions and/or weight restrictions are considered oversized and/or overweight and will be assessed a fee for each category that applies.
How much does United charge for overweight bags?
If your checked baggage is oversized then United will charge you $200-$400 per bag (up to maximum linear dimensions 115″). Charges for overweight baggage depends on your route and generally are $100 – $200 for bags weighing 51-70lb and $200 – $400 for bags weighing 71-100lb.

Overweight baggage fees can be far costlier than base charges for checked luggage. For example, American and United issue a fee of $100 for each checked bag weighing 50 – 70 pounds on domestic flights, or $200 for bags weighing more than 70 pounds.
What if my checked bag is too heavy?
If your checked bag does happen to be overweight, take out the heaviest items and place them in your temporary bag. Once the bag is under the luggage limit and the fee avoided, you can try putting the items back into the larger bag, check both, or take the temporary bag with you on the plane.

Baggage fees are per bag and per direction. So one way = one charge. Round trip = two charges. If your flight has a connection, bags will generally transfer from flight to flight and no additional fees will apply.
